Passed away peacefully at home in Palm Desert, California, surrounded by his family.

Bob was born in Oakland, California to George and Frances Thruston. He graduated in 1952 from Castlemont High School in Oakland, and attended San Francisco State and San Jose State. Bob served in the United States Army from 1957-1959 and according to his commanding officer, “had an attitude and devotion to duty in keeping with the highest standards of the military.” In 1966 he attended Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. A lifelong learner, Bob returned to college in 1973 to fulfill a dream, obtaining a degree in aviation while earning his commercial pilot certificate.

Bob’s career with the Southern Pacific Railroad spanned over 40 years in Operations, Marketing and Sales. He began as a brakeman in 1955 in Oakland and at the time of his retirement he was SP’s Vice President of Mexico, and President of two subsidiary companies: Southern Pacific Mexico and Southern Pacific International. A “Great Rail,” his work took him from Oakland to Los Angeles, Houston and the iconic One Market Plaza HQ in San Francisco. His high level of expertise was sought after by automotive and petroleum based companies in North America, Europe, and Asia. As tributes come pouring in from former employees, there is a common thread: Bob was both admired and respected. He was always a gentleman and never failed to say hello.

An accomplished musician, Bob played the clarinet and saxophone starting at a young age. He performed in his jazz band throughout high school and college, playing at parties and dances. Bob enjoyed telling the stories of his years playing in Bay Area talent shows. He always came in first place, unless that kid Johnny Mathis was competing.

Known by everyone as the consummate gentleman, Bob was deeply loved and adored by his family. He was charming and admirable, a true class act. He was the best husband, father, and grandfather anyone could ask for. Bob leaves his loving wife of 36 years, Antonia; his daughter Christine Sykes (Robert); daughter Corinne Russell (Mark); and stepdaughter Simone Echeguren (Alex). Grandpa Bob, or “Bob-Bob” as he is affectionately known, is also survived by grandchildren Andrew Echeguren, Chad Sykes (Karis), Kevin Sykes, and Chelse Russell. He also leaves his sister Janice Schwartz (Jim) and the mother of his children, Veronica Thruston.

Funeral services will be held at 11am, Monday, July 23, 2018 at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the charity of their choice.
