Bullpen role-play, the Melvin way

ARLINGTON, Texas — With one game — and a win at that — under Jeurys Familia’s belt, the A’s plans for him are becoming more clear.

Manager Bob Melvin, who got a chance for a more lengthy chat with the team’s new reliever Monday, indicated that Familia is likely to see duty primarily in the eighth inning, with Lou Trivino getting the seventh and All-Star closer Blake Treinen, of course, working the ninth (that was not in doubt).

“He’ll pitch in any role you ask him to pitch in,” Melvin said of Familia, a 2016 All-Star acquired from the Mets on Saturday. “It just depends on the day and the matchups and so forth, but typically we’ve been going a little more with Lou, which might suggest more of the seventh inning for him and Familia in the eighth. But that could flip around, too, and all of them are open to whatever we want to do.”

Melvin said it will be good to give Trivino a little bit of a break and limit the number of times he works multiple innings. “It’s his own fault for being so good and so productive,” Melvin said of Trivino’s workload. The rookie came up three weeks into the season and has thrown 461⁄3 innings; he’s at 512⁄3 innings total for the season combined with his work at Triple-A Nashville, which is second most in Oakland’s bullpen behind multi-innings specialist Yusmeiro Petit (621⁄3).

Treinen’s workload probably won’t change much, though. Melvin said Treinen is conditioned to work multiple innings and he hasn’t looked worn down. Injury updates: Starter Daniel Gossett had a setback in his return from a right elbow strain and he was shut down from throwing again. Melvin said Gossett is likely to visit another specialist soon.

Outfielder Matt Joyce (back) took some dry swings Monday, but Melvin said he’s not close to going on a rehab assignment. Another outfielder, Boog Powell, was heading to Triple-A Nashville to begin a rehab assignment. Powell has missed all but a week of the season with various injuries, including a knee sprain and a thumb injury.
