Merritt wins Barbasol by a stroke

-

Troy Merritt shot a 5-underpar 67 to finish at 265 to win the rain-delayed Barbasol Championship by a stroke over Billy Horschel (67), Richy Werenski (66) and Tom Lovelady (68).

It was Merritt’s second career PGA Tour victory — his first in three years — and it earned him a spot in next month’s PGA Championship. Merritt led or shared the lead after each round. He was one of four players tied for the lead when the round began. He made four birdies and an eagle. Tennis: The Silicon Valley Classic added another elite player when it was announced that two-time Grand Slam champion Garbiñe Muguruza, ranked seventh in the world, has entered the event that begins Monday at San Jose State. Muguruza won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017, earning her the world’s No. 1 ranking that September. The tournament runs through Aug. 5, with Serena Williams scheduled to play her first-round match next Tuesday evening. NBA: Dirk Nowitzki will become the first player in league history to play 21 consecutive seasons with the same organization. He signed a $5 million deal with the Mavericks that was a formality: Everyone knew he was staying. Nowitzki, a 13-time All-Star, is expected to retire after the season, but he hasn’t made an announcement. WNBA: The Dallas Wings and Washington Mystics have exchanged backup guards, with Tayler Hill and a second-round pick in next year’s draft going to Dallas for Aerial Powers. Colleges: Men’s golf coach Wally Goodwin, basketball guard Candice Wiggins and football lineman Kailee Wong lead the new class in the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame, the university announced. Other honorees are swimmer Kurt Grote, runner Gabe Jennings, synchronized swimmer Sara Lowe, triple jumper Erica McLain, gymnast Josh Stein and fencer Felicia Zimmermann. The class will be honored Sept. 8 at the home football game against USC.
