Press attacks: The publisher of the New York Times said Sunday he “implored” President Trump at a private White House meeting this month to reconsider his broad attacks on journalists, calling the president’s anti-press rhetoric “not just divisive but increasingly dangerous.” A.G. Sulzberger said he decided to comment publicly after Trump revealed their off-the-record meeting to his Twitter followers on Sunday. Trump’s aides had requested that the July 20 meeting not be made public, Sulzberger said. “Had a very good and interesting meeting at the White House with A.G. Sulzberger . ... Spent much time talking about the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media & how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, ‘Enemy of the People.’ Sad!” Trump wrote. Sulzberger said he told Trump that while the phrase “fake news” is untrue and harmful, “I am far more concerned about his labeling journalists ‘the enemy of the people.’ I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence.”

Missing hiker: Rescuers searched Sunday in the mountains of western Wyoming for a 13-year-old boy from Utah who became separated from his Boy Scout group during a hiking trip. Sheriff ’s Office Sgt. Travis Bingham said Sunday that it’s been more than 24 hours since Garrett Hunter was last seen in the Wind River Range near Elkhart Park. The scout group had been on a 50-mile multi-day hike. The area, about 10 miles from Pinedale, is remote but heavily traveled by hikers. Bingham said members of Hunter’s family and volunteers from Utah joined the search, which also includes a helicopter and other aircraft.

River rescue: A homeless man rescued a woman who had jumped from a bridge near downtown Minneapolis. The woman jumped from the Washington Avenue bridge early Saturday. The Star Tribune reported that a homeless man camping under the bridge heard the woman fall and jumped into the water to rescue her. The woman survived the plunge and was taken to a hospital for treatment and evaluation. Firefighters who also responded offered the man, who was not identified, shelter for the night. He declined.

Officer dies: A police officer in Fort Myers, Fla., has died from injuries he sustained in a shooting a week ago. Adam Jobbers-Miller, 29, died Saturday at a local hospital. He was shot in the head July 21 by a fleeing suspect while responding to a reported assault and theft at a gas station. The suspect, Wisner Desmaret, 29, was taken into custody after being shot by another officer.

Pump prices: The average price of regular gasoline fell 3 cents over the past two weeks to $2.91, industry analyst Trilby Lundberg reported Sunday. The price is 59 cents higher than it was one year ago. Lundberg said the drop comes mostly from lower crude oil prices and weak demand. The highest average price among the cities surveyed was $3.71 in San Francisco. The lowest was $2.50 in Baton Rouge, La.
