Braves deal for Brach

-

The Atlanta Braves bolstered their bullpen for a run at the NL East title, obtaining right-hander Brad Brach on Sunday in a trade with Baltimore for $250,000 of international signing-bonus allotment.

Brach is 1-2 with a 4.85 ERA and owns a 10.80 ERA in eight games this month. Left-handers are hitting .342 against him, and he has allowed runs in 11 of 42 appearances.

Brach is only two years removed from making the AL All-Star team, has 11 saves this season and worked as Baltimore’s closer for long stretches over the past two years.

“Look, he’s not having the year he’s had in the past, but we think there is some upside there based on what he’s done in the past,” Braves general manager Alex Anthopolous said.

Brach’s departure follows Baltimore’s trades of infielder Manny Machado to the Dodgers and closer Zach Britton to the Yankees.

Brach has a $5,165,000 salary and is eligible for free agency after the season. The trade saves the Orioles just less than $1.75 million as they continue in rebuilding mode. Turner latest to apologize: Nationals shortstop Trea Turner apologized for homophobic and racially insensitive tweets he posted as a teenager, becoming the latest in a series of major leaguers to address offensive language they used on social media. The tweets surfaced hours after Washington’s 5-0 loss at Miami. Devers on DL: The Red Sox placed third baseman Rafael Devers on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring he sustained Saturday night running the bases.
