Beathard to Canton for grandpa’s big day

In the middle of training camp, the 49ers have ordered C.J. Beathard to go to Ohio.

No, the backup quarterback isn’t being banished. Rather, he’s being blessed: Head coach Kyle Shanahan told Beathard he had to go to Canton, Ohio, to see his grandfather Bobby get inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Bobby Beathard, 81, was a longtime NFL personnel executive who was part of four Super Bowl-winning teams. He has a close relationship with his grandson, but C.J. Beathard wasn’t going to ask to leave the team during training camp to attend the induction ceremony.

“It means a lot,” Beathard said. “My grandpa is one of the biggest — if not the biggest — role model in my life and I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for him. So it means a lot to have them allow me to go to support him and see him get inducted.”

Said Shanahan: “He would never tell us, and he definitely didn’t ask. Then when I told him he had to go and he didn’t have a choice, then he told us how thankful he was.”

Bobby Beathard has Alzheimer’s disease, but he speaks regularly with his grandson.

“He more talks to me on a personal level, not necessarily about how did you practice today,” Beathard said. “… He looks at me more as his grandson, not an NFL quarterback.”

The 49ers have Saturday off. C.J. Beathard probably will miss Sunday morning’s practice. Injury report: Memo to Joshua Garnett: It sounds like it’s time to return to practice.

After the right guard missed his third straight practice because of an injury he sustained after banging knees with a teammate, Shanahan said he’d expected him to be available.

“It’s tough to make this team and do it if you’re not out there,” Shanahan said. “I was a little surprised Garnett didn’t (practice) today. I’d be more surprised if he’s not out there tomorrow.”

At the start of training camp, Garnett was expected to compete with Jonathan Cooper for the starting spot at right guard, but he was sharing first-team snaps with Mike Person before he got injured. Cooper is easing back into action after he was removed from an injury list Tuesday and went through individual drills for a second straight day.

Also, inside linebacker Brock Coyle (hip) will miss the rest of this week and be reevaluated next week. Cornerback Jimmie Ward (hamstring tightness) is day-to-day. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead (hamstring), tight end Cole Hikutini (groin) and guard JP Flynn (knee) did not practice.
