Born in San Francisco, He was the son of Vilma Olga Ingeborg and Verner John Hagberg. He graduated from SF State with a BS in biological science and a Master’s in education administration. He had a long career with the South San Francisco Unified School District as a teacher, Head of the Science Department, and Vice Principal (El Camino High School); Principal (Alta Loma Middle School); and Assistant District Superintendent. He was the Director of the Russell Bede School in San Mateo and served as the Director of the Bay Area Science Fair. He served for several years in the Coast Guard, stationed in Alameda.

He was an involved member of First Presbyterian Church, Burlingame, and was an Elder and Clerk of Session. He enjoyed discussing many topics, especially those related to politics, history, science, education, and the fine art of negotiation. His love of sports was always evident as he was a long and ardent fan of the San Francisco 49ers, the CAL football and basketball teams, and the Golden State Warriors. In his younger years, he was a basketball player and coach, as well as an avid tennis player. He had a way with a pun that was always appreciated. He will be missed as a beloved Boompa to his grandchildren. He loved spending time at the family cabin in Lake Tahoe and the many friends that graced our homes over the years. He will be remembered for his deep affection for his wife, Marilyn, his kind and generous spirit, and his love and care for his family, friends, and community.
