Colon is winningest Latin-born pitcher

Bartolo Colon managed to stay upright as he reached out and snagged the comeback liner while slipping into a squat, with a smile on his face and a ball from his milestone victory in his glove.

Colon’s 246th career win gave him the most wins for a pitcher born in Latin America, punctuated by a nifty snag for the last out of his seven innings as host Texas roughed up Felix Hernandez and the Mariners 11-4 on Tuesday night.

“I thought (first baseman Jurickson) Profar was going to throw the ball away to the public, to the fans,” Colon said through a translator. “But I saw it and then I started laughing because it happened that way.”

On his sixth try since earning his 245th win June 30 to match the mark held by Nicaragua’s Dennis Martinez, the Rangers’ right-hander from the Dominican Republic had the record to himself.

Hernandez (8-10) allowed a career-high 11 runs — seven earned — in six innings.
