Djokovic, Sharapova prevail in Canada

Novak Djokovic advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 7-6 (7) win over Mirza Basic at the Rogers Cup on Tuesday.

And former world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka came back to beat 16th-seed Nick Kyrgios 1-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Djokovic, a four-time champ and the ninth seed in Toronto, took care of his serve in the win over his Bosnian opponent. Djokovic had nine aces and was good on 76 percent of his first serves and 79 percent of his second-service points.

Americans Sam Querrey, Frances Tiafoe and Ryan Harrison joined Russia’s Karen Khachanov and Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas as other firstround winners.

Maria Sharapova advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over qualifier Sesil Karatantch­eva of Bulgaria.

Play resumed under the afternoon sun with Sharapova leading 4-1 in the first set after heavy rain and lightning forced organizers to suspend the match late Monday following a three-hour rain delay.

Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard is out after a 6-2, 6-4 firstround loss to Elise Mertens of Belgium.

ELSEWHERE Stanford soccer men, women No. 1

The Stanford men and women — each coming off national-championsh­ip seasons — will carry preseason No. 1 rankings into this season.

The three-time defending national champion men were tabbed the nation’s top team in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, which was released Tuesday. The Cardinal women were an overwhelmi­ng choice in the same poll, receiving 34 of 35 first-place votes. Santa Clara is No. 19.

Track and field: Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith and Zharnel Hughes won the 100-meter sprints at the European Athletics Championsh­ips in Berlin.

Asher-Smith, 22, won the women’s race in a British record 10.85 seconds, beating home favorite Gina Lueckenkem­per (10.98) and defending champion Dafne Schippers (10.99).

Hughes ran a championsh­ip-record 9.95 in the men’s 100, edging compatriot Reece Prescod by one hundredth of a second. Jak Ali Harvey of Turkey was third.

NBA: Cleveland has acquired forward Sam Dekker in a trade with the Clippers.

Dekker, a first-round pick by Houston in 2015, averaged 4.2 points and 2.4 rebounds as a reserve in 73 games last season for the Clippers. At 6-foot-9, Dekker figures to get more minutes with the Cavaliers, who are revamping their roster following LeBron James’ departure as a free agent.

The Memphis Grizzlies have signed guard Shelvin Mack. Terms of the deals weren’t disclosed.

Softball: Kristi Merritt and Sahvanna Jaquish homered as the United States beat South Africa 7-0 in five innings to remain undefeated at the women’s world championsh­ips in Japan.
