July 24, 1926 – August 3, 2018

Mary Speros, our loving mother and YiaYia, passed away peacefully in her Los Altos home on August 3rd. She will be joining her husband Peter J. Speros, parents John and Helen Stathis, and her brother Paul Stathis. Born in San Francisco to Greek immigrants, she was one of the first to experience what it is to be a Greek-American. She enjoyed the many Greek community gatherings with her relatives and friends from childhood and into her adult years. At the same time, she embraced American religious culture while attending Catholic schools. Mary and Peter raised their children John Speros (Anna), Chris Speros (Lori), Peter Speros Jr., and Tia Harker (James) in the Greek Orthodox tradition. Mary was a devoted mother and housewife and, when there was need for additional family income, she willingly went to work at the Roos Atkins department store for several years. She and her husband of almost 60 years still had time to enjoy life with their many friends and relatives. In later years, she particularly liked touring the country and world with Peter and their friends. Mary was an avid reader and regularly read the scriptures and the teachings of her Church. She is grandmother to Jeromie Speros, Peter Speros (Ana), James Speros, and Ben Harker. We will miss having her in our lives (and her loukomathes).

A visitation will be held at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave., Daly City, on Thursday, August 9 beginning at 4:00 pm. A Prayer Service (Trisagion) will be held there at 6:00 pm that evening. A Funeral Service will be held at the Greek Orthodox Cemetery, 1148 El Camino Real, Colma, for close relatives and friends on Friday, August 10 at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 900 Alameda del las Pulgas, Belmont, CA 94002 or the Holy Trinity Church, 999 Brotherhood Way, S.F., CA 94132.
