Cornerback Conley ‘healed quickly’

A surprising sight at the Raiders’ preseason opener Friday was cornerback Gareon Conley going through pregame warm-ups in full uniform.

Conley, who’d been recovering from a hip strain, did not play against the Lions. He did return to practice Monday for the first time since he was injured on the first day of training camp.

Although the Raiders limited Conley’s activity in his first padded practice, head coach Jon Gruden said he thought Conley was moving around “pretty good.”

“It’s great to see Gareon out there,” Gruden said. “He healed quicker than anybody expected. So credit to him and our training staff. We need to get him some work.”

Conley is still projected to start at corner opposite Rashaan Melvin despite his most recent setback. A shin injury limited the 2017 first-round pick to two games last year, and Conley missed part of minicamp in June with a groin issue.

Daryl Worley, who has played on the first-team defense in Conley’s absence, left practice early Monday after colliding with Melvin during a 7-on-7 drill. Worley appeared to be shaken but left the field under his own power.

“That happens in football,” Gruden said. “We’re hoping everybody’s all right.”

Penn’s deal modified: Donald Penn’s status on the offensive line when he returns from injury remains unclear, but it appears he and the Raiders have reached a level of financial stability.

According to multiple reports, Penn and the Raiders have agreed to a restructured contract for the Pro Bowl left tackle, who signed a two-year extension prior to last season.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the modified deal includes more guaranteed money for Penn over the next two seasons as well as unspecified team-friendly alterations.

Penn signed a two-year extension reportedly worth up to $21 million in September to stay in Oakland through 2019.

Penn, 35, is on the physically unable to perform list while working back from Lisfranc foot surgery he had in December.

Venue change: The Raiders’ Oct. 14 game against Seattle in London has been moved to Wembley Stadium.

The game was set to be played at the new stadium of English Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur. However, Tottenham said Monday it will not be able to host NFL games this year because of “issues with the critical safety systems” at the stadium, which is still being finished, according to the Associated Press.
