Marlins’ Ureña appeals suspension

-

Marlins pitcher Jose Ureña is appealing his six-game suspension for hitting Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves with a pitch.

Ureña was in uniform Friday and Marlins manager Don Mattingly didn’t rule out using him this weekend against the Nationals.

Major League Baseball announced the suspension and undisclosed fine Thursday, a day after Ureña hit Acuña on the left arm with his first pitch in the Marlins’ 5-2 loss in Atlanta. Ureña is eligible to play until the appeal process is complete.

“When I saw I hit a guy, I feel bad,” Ureña said Friday. “I said something: ‘Hey, you’ll be OK.’ I said it in Spanish.”

Acuña went into the game having homered in five straight games, including four homers in the three games against Miami.

“I talked to him right after the game,” Mattingly said of Ureña. “He said he was trying to run the ball close to him and that’s exactly what he told me.”

Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig is appealing his twogame suspension for his role in a benches-clearing incident against the Giants. Puig was suspended Thursday after he took a swing at Giants catcher Nick Hundley in the seventh inning of the Dodgers’ 2-1 home loss Tuesday.

Bauer sidelined: The Indians say pitcher Trevor Bauer, one of the leading candidates for the AL Cy Young Award, will be out at least four weeks because of a stress fracture in his right leg.

Bauer was hit by White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu’s liner Saturday. An MRI exam revealed the injury Tuesday and Bauer was placed on the 10-day disabled list.

The right-hander is 12-6 with a 2.22 ERA in 25 starts.

Bauer could return by midSeptember. Manager Terry Francona said he knows the pitcher’s arm will be ready.

“I think in about 10 days he can throw standing, and then in another 10 days, it’s probably close to the mound work,” Francona said. “My guess is his arm is going to feel pretty good.”

Injury report: The Reds placed first baseman Joey Votto on the DL with a right lower leg injury . ... Rangers center fielder Delino DeShields has been placed on the DL with a fracture on the tip of his right middle finger . ... The Cubs put left-hander Mike Montgomery on the DL because of left shoulder inflammation.
