Clayton Valley win opens year

- CHRONICLE STAFF

A crucial forced fumble, a late field goal and two touchdowns in overtime helped No. 6 Clayton Valley-Concord pull out a 38-31 win over No. 2 Pittsburg to open the high school football season Friday night in Pittsburg.

Trailing 24-21 with just under five minutes left in regulation, Clayton Valley got its break thanks to a defensive stand. A lateral by Pittsburg ended up on the ground and Cade Carter scooped it up, returning it 34 yards to put the Ugly Eagles on the Pittsburg 37.

Camden Grant tied the score with a 23-yard field goal with 17.8 seconds remaining, forcing an overtime session that put each team on the 10-yard line with four chances to score.

Pittsburg struck first in overtime on a 1-yard run by Jack Lacy III, but Clayton Valley countered with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Logan Sumter to Carter on 4th-andgoal.

Clayton Valley got the ball first in the second overtime and scored on a 4-yard run by Sumter. Pittsburg got its chance to respond but a last-ditch pass to the corner of the end zone fell incomplete to end the game.

Makhi Gervais led Clayton Valley with 102 yards rushing and a touchdown. Sumter rushed for 64 yards and a score.

Avant Muldrow rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown and Willie Harts III returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a score to lead Pittsburg.
