Dodgers activate Jansen

-

All-Star closer Kenley Jansen was activated off the disabled list for the Dodgers earlier than expected after being cleared by a cardiologist.

Jansen entered to pitch in the ninth inning of Monday night’s series opener against St. Louis. He gave up home runs to his first two batters, Jedd Gyorko and Matt Carpenter. Jansen took the loss in the 5-3 decision.

Jansen hadn’t pitched since Aug. 7 and was on the 10-day DL after being hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat Aug. 9 when the team was in Denver.

Jansen initially was expected to miss about a month. He previously was treated for an irregular heartbeat in 2011 and 2012. He has said it’s likely he’ll need offseason surgery to deal with the issue.

“It’s a huge lift,” manager Dave Roberts said before the game. “He’s the best in the game.”

Until Monday, Jansen was 0-3 with 32 saves and a 2.15 ERA in 51 games. The Dodgers’ bullpen had a 5.17 ERA in Jansen’s absence. Briefly: Baltimore put designated hitter Mark Trumbo (right knee) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled outfielder John Andreoli from Triple-A Norfolk. Center fielder Adam Jones was reinstated from the bereavement list . ... Toronto reinstated catcher Luke Maile from the paternity list and optioned right-hander Sean Reid Foley to Triple-A Buffalo . ... The Braves designated infielder Ryan Flaherty for assignment and outrighted left-hander Chad Bell to Triple-A Gwinnett.
