Monte Vista-Danville (1-0) vs. No. 24 San Leandro (1-0) at Burrell Field:
Under second-year coach Matt Russi, Monte Vista pulled out a big cross-sectional win, 9-3, at Granite Bay. Monte Vista will face an offense that scored at will in a 45-28 opening-night win at home versus FoothillPleasanton.
San Benito-Hollister (0-0) at Terra Nova-Pacifica (0-1):
The host Tigers — with captains Layne Couri (a linebacker) and Giovanni FabianiWyatt (strong safety) and new quarterback Jaried Julian — could be the favorites of the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division. At halftime, the school’s stadium will be named after Bill Gray, who won 10 league championships in his 23 years as head coach.
Central Catholic-Modesto (1-0) at No. 1 De La Salle-Concord (1-0), 7:30 p.m.:
The programs, each coming off shutout wins, have combined for 11 state titles (seven for DLS), the most of any two teams in California. Central Catholic is led by four-star cornerback and leading rusher Dawaiian McNeely. Central Catholic coach Roger Canepa told the Modesto Bee: “We are excited but we didn’t pick this game to go down and not win. It’s a tough job, don’t get me wrong, and we respect everybody but fear nobody.” De La Salle’s Northern California unbeaten streak stands at 291.
