English players ready to step aside

English Premier League players Gary Cahill of Chelsea and Jamie Vardy of Leicester, who helped England reach the semifinals of the World Cup in Russia in July, told England coach Gareth Southgate that they no longer want to be considered for the national team.

Cahill, a 32-year-old defender, has made 61 internatio­nal appearance­s for England. Vardy, a 31-year-old striker, has played 26 matches for England.

Marseille, which plays in France’s Ligue 1, signed Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman to a five-year, $29 million deal. Strootman, 28, scored 13 goals in 130 appearance­s for Italy’s Serie A club Roma over the previous five seasons.

Borussia Dortmund of Germany’s Bundesliga acquired forward Paco Alcacer, 24, on loan from Spanish La Liga team Barcelona with an option to buy. Kicker magazine reported Dortmund will pay $2.3 million for the loan spell. A permanent transfer fee would be $27 million if the club keeps him.

Los Angeles FC All-Star defender Laurent Ciman, the team’s captain, is leaving the Major League Soccer club for Dijon in Ligue 1. Ciman, 33, spent three seasons with MLS’s Montreal Impact before being traded to LAFC in December. Golf: Fairfield’s Jeff Wilson defeated.Buddy Path of Fairfax Station, Va., 5 and 4 in the round of 32, then topped Scott Sullivan of Grand Junction, Colo., (2 and 1) to reach the quarterfin­als at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championsh­ip in Eugene, Ore. Wilson, 55, will face Ned Zachar of Bedford, N.Y., on Wednesday. NHL: Former goalie Martin Brodeur, who will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November, is leaving the St. Louis Blues after spending the past three years as assistant general manager.
