John Robert McKean

John McKean passed away after a brief illness on the evening of August 21, 2018. John was born in Evanston, Illinois but moved to the San Francisco Bay Area as an infant and continued to reside there throughout most of his life. After retirement, he left his home in Marin and began splitting his time between his homes in Lake Tahoe and Scottsdale, Arizona.

John is survived by his loving family and wife Sherry Worth McKean, and four children, John McKean, Jr., Jacqueline Guiteras, Sabrina Dragos, Lexi Cardellini and predecease­d by his daughter Pamela McKean.

John graduated from University of San Francisco in 1951 with a BS degree majoring in accounting and later earned his MBA from Golden Gate University in 1977. He started his own accounting practice, John R. McKean & Co. after receiving his CPA license in 1958. He incorporat­ed the practice in 1973 and took in his first two partners at that time. He was known for his expert testimony and served many law firm clients in litigation support.

In 1982 he was appointed by President Ronald Regan to the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service and was later elected Chairman of the board in 1984. He also served as a board member of Bay View Federal Savings and Loan Associatio­n which later became Bayview Bank where he also served as Chairman.

John was sworn in as a US Marshall in 1994 but was most interested in its ceremonial activities. In contemplat­ion of retirement in 2000, John R. McKean and Co. merged with a large local CPA firm, Burr, Pilger & Mayer. He worked part time performing litigation support for another ten years.

He will be missed by those who knew and loved him, especially on his Tahoe deck at 5 PM where all were welcome.
