Derby puts Man U out of League Cup

-

The coaching apprentice got the better of his former master as Frank Lampard’s Derby knocked Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United out of the League Cup in London.

In a shootout after the game ended 2-2, the teams scored 15 consecutive penalties before United defender Phil Jones’ effort was saved by goalkeeper Scott Carson.

City was Lampard’s last English team after spending most of his career at Chelsea, where Mourinho had two spells as manager. The former England midfielder is in only his second month as a manager after being hired by Derby.

“I’m a bit shell-shocked in a good way, what a performance from the team,” Lampard told broadcaster Sky Sports. “To have the personality to take penalties and perform the way they did. I’m just a proud manager.”

Also, Mourinho stripped Paul Pogba of the Manchester United vice captaincy, but didn’t offer an explanation.

Harvey Elliott became the youngest player for Fulham at 15 years and 174 days. The striker made his debut for the Premier League club, entering in the 81st minute of a 3-1 win over Millwall in the third round of the League Cup.

Basketball: Brittney Griner scored 15 points in her first game of the FIBA Women’s World Cup to lead the U.S. to a 102-76 victory over Latvia in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. Griner missed the first two games with a mildly sprained right ankle.

Tennis: Andy Murray advanced to the second round of the Shenzhen Open in China when Chinese wild-card entry Zhang Zhizhen had to retire in the third set.

Zhang took advantage of Murray’s inconsistent serve to win the second set, but started limping in the third and retired when trailing 6-3, 6-7 (3), 4-2.
