Sharks lose exhibition

Antti Suomela scored two goals, giving him a team-leading four for the preseason, but the Sharks fell to the Calgary Flames 4-3 at SAP Center on Thursday night.

Timo Meier added a goal and Martin Jones made 18 saves for San Jose.

Travis Hamonic and Elias Lindholm each recorded a goal and an assist for Calgary.

Erik Karlsson made his preseason debut for the Sharks, who acquired the two-time Norris Trophy winner on Sept. 13 from Ottawa. He finished with an assist in 25:05 of ice time.

The Sharks finish their exhibition schedule Sunday in Las Vegas, then open the regular season in San Jose against the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday.

NHL investigat­ing Flyers’ Lehtera

The NHL is investigat­ing Philadelph­ia Flyers forward Jori Lehtera after a report he’s being questioned in connection with a drug bust in Finland.

Finnish news agency MTV reported Wednesday that Lehtera is connected with an investigat­ion into a cocaine ring. Lehtera’s attorney said no charges have been filed.

1 Mark Letestu is returning to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team signed the 33-year-old forward to a two-way contract for this season after he spent the end of last season on the Blue Jackets’ roster.

Letestu played for Columbus from 2011 to 2015. He was picked up at the trade deadline last season from Edmonton. College football: Miami tied a school record with three defensive touchdowns, N’Kosi Perry threw for a score in his first start and the No. 16 Hurricanes (4-1, 1-0 ACC) rolled to a 47-10 win over visiting North Carolina (1-3, 1-1). Tennis: Jim Courier is finished as captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team after eight years. The U.S. Tennis Associatio­n said Courier is “stepping down,” less than two weeks after the Americans lost to host Croatia 3-2 in the Davis Cup semifinals.

1 Andy Murray advanced to the quarterfin­als of the Shenzhen Open in China by beating David Goffin 6-3, 6-4. College baseball: St. Mary’s head coach Eric Valenzuela has received a five-year contract extension. Valenzuela has led the Gaels to 30-plus wins for three consecutiv­e seasons. Boxing: HBO is getting out of the live boxing business after more than 1,000 fights over four decades. The network will televise the Oct. 27 middleweig­ht title fight between Danny Jacobs and Sergiy Derevyanch­enko, then bow out. Golf: Kevin O’Connell won an all-North Carolina final in the U.S. Mid-Amateur, beating Brett Boner 4 and 3 at Charlotte Country Club for a likely Masters invitation. O’Connell also earned spots in the U.S. Open next year at Pebble Beach and the next two U.S. Amateurs.
