Hundreds of flights at San Francisco International Airport were delayed or canceled over the weekend as two heavily used runways were shut down for maintenance.

There were 118 cancellations and 467 delayed flights on Saturday. As of midday Sunday, there were four cancellations and 61 delays, said Shawn Miyaki, airport duty manager at SFO.

Crews worked on the structure below the pavement “in preparation for holiday traffic and rainy winter weather,” an airport news release said. Miyaki said all work was completed on schedule. He didn’t have additional details on what work was done.

Miyaki said it wasn’t clear how many of the delays and cancellations were because of the runway maintenance.

The affected runways, 28L and 01R, are among the busiest in the airport. Runway 28L was closed from Saturday at 1 a.m. to Sunday at 7 a.m. Runway 01R was closed Saturday from 1 a.m. to 11 p.m.

“The intersection of two runways are among the most heavily used surfaces at SFO,” Ivar Satero, SFO airport director said in a statement. “This weekend runway maintenance work will ensure this high-traffic area remains available during our busy holiday travel season, and through wet weather conditions. I appreciate the patience and understanding of travelers during this closure.”

American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and JetBlue were among the airlines affected, according to social media posts.
