Reimagined Roaring ‘20s four-bedroom in Castro district retains ornate details
It’s a 21st century take on Roaring ‘20s extravagance in the heart of the Castro district.
Originally built in 1929, 143 Collingwood St. is a four-bedroom that was taken to the studs and reimagined by designer Chris Miniello of Birch + Taylor Interiors & Boutique.
“It’s a stunningly gorgeous home with a flexible layout,” said Arrian Binnings of Pacific Union, who is representing the listing with Payton Stiewe and Sejal Binnings, also of Pacific Union. “No expense was spared, and Miniello’s design is genius.”
The home boasts a dramatic kitchen, a sumptuous master suite and an entire level dedicated to a guest suite. Statuary marble, English white oak and Ann Sacks tiles highlight an extensive material palette studded with high-tech inclusions like integrated Bose speakers, Lutron lighting and Nest thermostats.
Sporting a new facade, updated structural and a landscaped backyard with brick patio, the home is decidedly modern though Miniello’s subtle touch weaves classical finishes from a bygone era inside and out.
Edison bulbs shine from antique sconces along the facade, while gold leaf railings border the marble steps ascending to the front door.
The living room’s mantle, an ornate piece with intricate carvings in fossilized limestone, is original to the home. High-gloss custom millwork traces around the public rooms as chandeliers descend from understated ceiling medallions.
Views of Twin Peaks and Sutro Tower await in the living room, which opens to a balcony through a pair of Bonelli French doors. A stone slab counter provides a spot for a bottle of sherry and an integrated downlight illuminates a built-in cabinet.
