Man dies after struggle with deputies in street

A man died after running into traffic and struggling with sheriff ’s deputies in Millbrae Wednesday, officials said.

A deputy with the San Mateo County Sheriff ’s Office responded to a report of a man running in and out of traffic on the 1300 block of El Camino Real around 1 p.m. The deputy got out of his vehicle and told investigat­ors he was “immediatel­y assaulted” by the man, officials said.

The deputy called for assistance and became engaged in a struggle with the man, according to the Sheriff ’s Office.

Police provided few details of the confrontat­ion Wednesday night, only stating that the man, who police have not publicly identified, struggled with responding deputies until he was arrested.

He was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries and died. Police said the incident did not involve gunfire.

The deputy who was allegedly assaulted was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Police have not released the identity of the deputy or the names of the officers who responded to the scene.

Officials with the San Mateo County district attorney’s office and the San Mateo County coroner’s office are investigat­ing the incident, as is standard protocol.
