Worley returns from suspension

- By Matt Kawahara Matt Kawahara is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.

Cornerback Daryl Worley said he watched the Raiders’ first four games this season from home while suspended for violating the NFL’s policy on substance abuse and personal conduct.

“It’s difficult simply because you know that you want to be out there, you should be out there, but because of circumstances, I couldn’t,” Worley said.

Worley returned to practice with the Raiders on Wednesday. He is currently a roster exemption and not active; the Raiders will have to make a corresponding move by Saturday if they activate Worley to play against the Chargers on Sunday.

“We don’t know what his status is going to be for the game,” head coach Jon Gruden said, “but he is back with us.”

Though Worley was not allowed to practice or be with the team on game days, a rule change this season allowed him to attend meetings and work out at the team’s facility while suspended. He described that as “a positive both mentally and physically.”

“Just being around your teammates every day, those guys, they really kept me strong,” Worley said. “Just asking each and every day how I’m doing, when I’ll be back, how I’m feeling.”

The Raiders signed Worley, 23, in April shortly after he was arrested in Philadelphia and cut by the Eagles. In June, Worley pleaded guilty to DUI, carrying a firearm in public and resisting arrest. He was credited for time served, fined $1,000 and assessed two years of probation.

Worley said he noticed a difference in the defense while observing the team’s 1-3 start.

“We need to have more effort,” Worley said. “That’s all around, all 11 guys, whoever it is out there on the field, no matter who it may be. We need to fly around like we were in training camp on defense, just having more fun with the game, not so much worried about the game plan or what the offense might be doing but executing our techniques and things.” Honor: Dwayne Harris was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his play against the Browns. Harris averaged 19.5 yards on five punt returns, including a 49-yarder that set up a field goal. Harris also had a tackle and an assist on punt coverage. Injuries: Left guard Kelechi Osemele (knee) did not practice Wednesday after sustaining an injury late against the Browns. Running back Marshawn Lynch (shoulder) and safety Karl Joseph (hamstring) also did not practice. Receiver Amari Cooper (foot), center Rodney Hudson (ankle), defensive tackle Maurice Hurst (shoulder), right guard Gabe Jackson (pectoral) and left tackle Kolton Miller (knee) were limited.
