Cornerback lineup still up in the air

In his first game with the Raiders, cornerback Daryl Worley played 49 defensive snaps in their 26-10 loss to the Chargers on Sunday.

Gareon Conley, the 2017 first-round draft pick who opened the season as a starter, played 13.

On Monday, head coach Jon Gruden said the discrepancy was a reflection on both players.

“Worley played good,” Gruden said. “Worley’s a good player. Gareon had a couple of struggles (Sunday). We’re trying to find the right mix — trying to find the right mix at a lot of positions.”

Worley, a training-camp standout who was suspended for the first four games of the season for violating NFL policies on substance abuse and personal conduct, led the Raiders with seven solo tackles Sunday.

According to Pro Football Focus, Worley was targeted in coverage on five plays and allowed four catches for 17 yards.

Conley was targeted once and allowed a 48-yard completion.

Cornerback has been in flux with Conley and Rashaan Melvin the primary outside corners and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who was signed in late August, rotating in during games.

Gruden said after Sunday’s game Worley “potentially could stabilize us” at corner, and seemed to reiterate that Monday when asked if the Raiders are close to having two set starters.

“I think we’re getting closer,” Gruden said. “I think seeing Worley for the first time helps. We’re pretty confident where he is now.”

Snap counts: After moving to a new role as a pass-rushing defensive end, Bruce Irvin has played 55.4 percent of Oakland’s defensive snaps in five games compared with 84.7 percent last season.

Irvin has three of the Raiders’ six sacks but has played less than rookie Arden Key (60.6 percent) and Sunday played fewer snaps (33) than Fadol Brown (34). Gruden was asked if that is a result of Irvin’s new role.

“I think so,” Gruden said. “He’s a really good edge player. And trying to keep him fresh, trying to keep him doing what he does best. We’re not playing a 3-4 defense in the base. He’s not able to play outside linebacker. He’s playing defensive end full-time now. So trying to keep him in good positions where he can do what he does best.”

At middle linebacker, Derrick Johnson has ceded snaps the past three weeks to secondyear player Marquel Lee. Johnson played 28 percent of snaps Sunday. Lee was on the field for 75 percent.

“I think it’s a little bit more about what Marquel’s doing,” Gruden said. “Again, we’re trying to find the right mix, in our base defense, in our sub package, and who we’re playing. And that’ll continue to be the case this week against Russell Wilson and the Seahawks.”
