Shumpert, Kings blunt return of Westbrook

Iman Shumpert scored 26 points and the Kings beat the Thunder 131-120 in Oklahoma City on Sunday night to spoil Russell Westbrook’s return.

Westbrook missed the preseason and the first two regular-season games after having a procedure to deal with inflammati­on in his right knee. He had 32 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in 35 minutes after averaging a triple-double the past two seasons.

“I was OK,” he said. “It wasn’t my best night, but I’ve got however many more games left to play, so I’m not worried. ... I just hate losing.”

De’Aaron Fox scored 22 points and Buddy Hield added 17 for the Kings. They shot 54.9 percent to earn their first win.

Sacramento head coach Dave Joerger said it was a big victory for his team.

“They come back from the West Coast, they get their guy back and opening night, and a lot going on,” Joerger said. “I’ve got a lot of respect for them. We got the ball up and down the floor and we played fast.”

Paul George scored 29 points for the Thunder.

Hawks 133, Cavaliers 111: Trae Young had 35 points with 11 assists and visiting Atlanta dropped Cleveland to 0-3 without LeBron James. The No. 5 overall pick, Young is the first rookie to reach at least 35 points and 10 assists since Stephen Curry in 2010. Young missed four of his first five shots but finished 13-for-23 from the field. Kevin Love had 16 points and 17 rebounds for the Cavaliers.

Clippers 115, Rockets 112: Montrezl Harrell led a fourth-quarter charge by Clippers reserves with 17 points, and host Los Angeles defeated Houston. James Harden had 31 points and 14 assists for the Rockets and scored nine straight points to cut Houston’s deficit to three with 29 seconds left. His potential tying three-pointer was short as time expired.
