McGwire resigns as Padres’ bench coach

-

San Diego manager Andy Green said Mark McGwire won’t return as the Padres’ bench coach next season in order to spend more time with his family.

McGwire, the former A’s and Cardinals first baseman who hit 583 home runs during his bigleague career, spent three seasons on the Padres’ staff.

“He wants to watch his two boys play high school baseball,” Green said in a text. “We talked about it a lot before the season ended.” McGwire lives in Irvine. McGwire joined the Padres after spending three seasons as hitting coach of the Dodgers. Before that, McGwire was hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals for three seasons following a hiatus after his steroid-tainted playing career ended.

Slain Utah athlete had filed complaint

A University of Utah student and track athlete who was shot and killed on campus by a former boyfriend had filed a police complaint against him after she learned he was a sex offender and broke off the relationship, authorities said Tuesday.

Investigators had been working to build a case after receiving the report from 21-year-old Lauren McCluskey, a senior from Pullman, Wash., university police chief Dale Brophy said. He declined to disclose further details on the report.

The victim’s mother, Jill McCluskey, said her daughter had filed a harassment complaint after breaking up with 37-year-old Melvin Rowland.

Lauren McCluskey had dated Rowland for about a month, then ended the relationship Oct. 9 when she learned he had lied about his age, name and criminal history, Jill McCluskey said in a statement. It wasn’t clear how the two met.

Jill McCluskey said she had been talking on the phone with her daughter as she returned from a night class and heard her yell, “No, no, no!” A few minutes later, a woman picked up the phone and said all of Lauren McCluskey’s belongings were on the ground.

“I thought she might have been in a car accident,” Jill McCluskey said. “That was the last I heard from her.” Tennis: Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki earned her first victory at this year’s WTA Finals in Singapore, beating Petra Kvitova 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

Elina Svitolina earned her second straight win in the other group match, outlasting Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. The results mean all four players are still in contention to advance to the semifinals from the White Group.

Wozniacki, who became the first Danish woman to win a Grand Slam title at this year’s Australian Open, is 1-1. Kvitova is 0-2.

Roger Federer was tested by Filip Krajinovic before winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round of his hometown tournament, the Swiss Indoors.

Seeking a ninth title at Basel — where he once was a ball boy — Federer last dropped a set in his opening match 10 years ago.

Federer next plays Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday. The German beat Australia’s John Millman, who eliminated Federer at the U.S. Open last month, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Seventhseeded Daniil Medvedev, who is also in Federer’s half of the draw, beat Maximilian Marterer of Germany 6-3, 7-5. Medvedev next faces Andreas Seppi, a 34-year-old Italian, who eased past qualifier Taro Daniel 6-0, 6-4.
