Barbara Jo Brandt, Ph.D.

Dr. Barbara Jo Brandt passed away peacefully in June 2018 in San Mateo, after an eleven-month battle with cancer. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1947, she obtained her B.A. in Psychology from Stanford in 1969, and her Ph.D. in 1976 in Clinical Psychology from Michigan State. Barb began her career as staff psychologi­st at Chicago’s Children’s Memorial Hospital. In 1984, she joined Stanford’s Division of Child Psychiatry and Children’s Developmen­t, serving as Chief Psychologi­st and Director of Training, and then Head of Mental Health at Children’s Health Council. She developed the psychology internship training program, obtaining American Psychologi­cal Associatio­n approval (1990). Barbara later establishe­d a private practice in Los Altos, mentored psychology assistants, supervised trainees, and taught courses as an Adjunct Clinical Professor in the Stanford School of Medicine. She retired in June 2017. Friends and family will remember Barbara’s bright mind, sweet dispositio­n, devotion to her craft, and unwavering optimism. She loved summering in Michigan, singing in her church choir, attending concerts, the theater, and Stanford football and basketball games. Survivors include her sister Beverly Brandt (Scottsdale, AZ), brother, Richard Brandt, niece Kristen Brandt, great nephew William Griffin, great niece Charlotte Griffin (Skaneatele­s, NY), nephew Stephen Brandt (Buffalo, NY), step daughter Clare (John) Hansen, step grandson Joseph Hansen, step granddaugh­ter Gemma Hansen (Alameda, CA), step daughter Laura (Steve) Stine, step grandson Conifer Stine (Anchorage, AK) and numerous cousins. A memorial service will take place at Palo Alto’s First United Methodist Church on Sunday, October 28 at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, Barbara requested donations to support psychology interns in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford.
