49ers’ game review

- — Eric Branch

OFFENSE

Nick brilliant. came Mullens against OK, his was a don’tcover-anyone debut beyond but Mr. Anonymous deserves defense, major kudos for quickly setting the tone with back-to-back TD drives. TE George Kittle’s “sick” — Mullens’ word — one-handed, 71-yard grab led to Mullens’ third TD pass. The 49ers had 34 points and 405 yards despite backing off in the final quarter.

DEFENSE

Again, it’s not clear at this point whether the NFL Raiders team, but are the an 49ers dominated them with eight sacks and held them scoreless for the final 54-plus minutes. It will be a major development if DE Cassius Marsh (2.5 sacks) can do that against another offensive line. The 49ers held Oakland to 242 yards and 4.4 yards per play.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Bradley Pinion had a 64-yard punt, averaged 54.7 yards on three kicks and had a 48.0 net average. That’s good. Robbie Gould drilled both FG attempts (39, 25). Not much happened in the return game: Richie James had a 6-yard punt return and didn’t get a chance to return a kickoff.

COACHING

Kyle had Shanahan the lightly regarded Mullens ready for his big opportunity. The flip side: Why didn’t he put this man in a game earlier? That defensive performance will lessen the heat on coordinator Robert Saleh’s seat for at least a week.

OVERALL

They beat a horrendous opponent, showed they but were the one-win team with standards. Among them: They try hard. Mullens is a good story and it won’t be a surprise if he gets a second start against the Giants on Nov. 12.
