Bayview man shot Oct. 5 died days later, police reveal

- By Sarah Ravani

A 21-year-old man who was shot nearly three weeks ago in San Francisco’s Bayview died two days later, officials acknowledged for the first time Thursday.

Lionel Clark of Antioch was shot about 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 15 and died in the hospital Oct. 17, according to the San Francisco medical examiner.

Authorities have been investigating the shooting since it occurred, said Officer Adam Lobsinger, a San Francisco Police Department spokesman.

So far, no arrests have been made and no suspect information was made available.

Police did not previously release information about the shooting or Clark’s death.

Lobsinger said he doesn’t know why the shooting went unreported in the daily crime summary that’s sent to media.

“There was an incident report,” Lobsinger said. “There’s an ongoing investigation.”

Businesses in the area said they were aware of the shooting though many, including a beauty salon, chicken restaurant and bakery, said they were closed when it happened.

Bilal, a 25-year-old who declined to give his

last name, was at home during his break from a shift at All Nite Pizza, located at 5155 Third St., when the shooting occurred. He heard the shots from his home, which is nearly a block from the restaurant.

Bilal, whose parents own the restaurant, checked the surveillance cameras to make sure the shooting didn’t occur at the pizzeria. When he realized it was across the street from the business, he hurried over and found officers already at the scene, he said.

“They rushed to the person,” he said. “They started giving him CPR right away.”

Over the next week, officers were seen in the neighborhood talking to merchants and asking for surveillance footage.

Bilal said the cameras from All Nite Pizza were too far away to capture anything.

“We’ve been in the community for a really long time, so we feel pretty safe, to be honest,” Bilal said. “My parents opened the restaurant 25 years ago. Most of the community knows us around here.”

There have been 40 homicides in San Francisco in 2018.

The most recent homicide occurred on Friday. Kevin Driscol, 53, of San Francisco, was killed on the 400 block of Ellis Street.

Police have not elaborated on the circumstances or motive for Driscol’s slaying.
