In something of a foregone conclusion, A’s manager Bob Melvin was named one of the three finalists for the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s American League Manager of the Year Award on Monday.

Melvin, who was named the Sporting News’ AL Manager of the Year last month, is the frontrunner for the BBWAA honor, which will be presented next Tuesday. The other finalists are Boston’s Alex Cora and Tampa Bay’s Kevin Cash.

After three consecutive lastplace finishes, Melvin, 57, guided Oakland to 97 wins in 2018, the team’s highest total since 2002, despite numerous injuries to the rotation throughout the season and the league’s lowest Opening Day payroll. The A’s earned the second wildcard spot and lost to the Yankees on Oct. 3.

Melvin also won the BBWAA AL Manager of the Year honor in 2012 after the A’s won the division title on the final day of the season, and he was the NL Manager of the Year in 2007 after taking Arizona to the NL West title.

Cora, in his first year as a manager, helped Boston to a major-league-best 108 wins and the Red Sox went on to win the World Series. Voting for BBWAA awards is conducted before the postseason starts.

Cash got the Rays back over the .500 mark for the first time in five years in part by employing “bullpenning,” using select relievers to open games and then turning to starters for the next several innings. (The A’s used the same strategy at times in September with mixed results and went with a full bullpen game in the wild-card matchup.) Tampa Bay won 90 games but finished third in the AL East, 18 games behind Boston.

The finalists for AL MVP are Boston’s Mookie Betts, José Ramírez of the Indians and Mike Trout of the Angels, with Colorado’s Nolan Arenado, Javier Báez of the Cubs and Christian Yelich of the Brewers vying for the NL honor.

Rookie of the Year finalists for the AL are Miguel Andújar of the Yankees, Angels two-way player Shohei Ohtani and Gleyber Torres of the Yankees, and for the NL, Ronald Acuña, Jr. of the Braves, Walker Buehler of the Dodgers and Washington’s Juan Soto.

The AL Cy Young finalists are Corey Kluber of the Indians, Blake Snell of the Rays and Justin Verlander of the Astros, and the NL Cy Young finalists are Jacob DeGrom of the Mets, Aaron Nola of the Phillies and Washington’s Max Scherzer.

The NL Manager of the Year finalists are Bud Black of the Rockies, Milwaukee’s Craig Counsell and Atlanta’s Brian Snitker.

The Rookie of the Year awards will be presented Monday, the Cy Young awards Nov. 14 and the MVPs on Nov. 15.
