USF takes control early, hammers UC Davis

Less than 15 seconds into USF’s opener at UC Davis on Tuesday night, the Aggies’ Matt Neufeld scored the game’s first basket. That was the last time the Dons trailed.

USF scored the next 15 points and proceeded to humble the Aggies 76-42.

Three USF players — Charles Minlend (16 points), Jordan Ratinho (14) and Matt McCarthy (11) — scored in double figures. No Davis player scored more than eight points.

The Dons also owned a 43-28 edge in rebounds.

USF plays its home opener against Maine on Saturday afternoon.

NATIONAL MEN No. 4 Duke beats No. 2 Kentucky

#4 Barrett Duke scored 118, #2 33 Kentucky points and 84: Zion RJ Williamson added 28 in their first college games, leading the Blue Devils in the season-opening Champions Classic in Indianapol­is. It was the most lopsided defeat in head coach John Calipari’s tenure at Kentucky and marked the eighth time in 10 meetings the Blue Devils have beaten the Wildcats. Both Barrett and Williamson surpassed Marvin Bagley III’s program record for points by a freshman in his debut at 25. Cam Reddish added 22 points and Tre Jones had six, giving Duke’s freshmen a combined 89 points. Keldon Johnson scored 23 points to lead Kentucky. Reid Travis, a graduate transfer from Stanford, added 22 for the Wildcats. #1 Kansas 92, #10 Michigan St. 87: In the opening game of the Champions Classic, Quentin Grimes scored 21 points in his college debut and Dedric Lawson added 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Jayhawks. The Spartans were led by Joshua Langford with 18 points and Kenny Goins with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Spartans fell to 4-21 against No. 1 teams. #3 Gonzaga 120, Idaho State 79: Rui Hachimura scored 33 points and Zach Norvell Jr. added 23 points for the host Bulldogs, who have the highest preseason ranking in school history. #5 Virginia made six 73, three-pointers Towson 42: Ty on Jerome his way to 20 points and De’Andre Hunter had 13 and 10 rebounds for the host Cavaliers, who were playing for the first time since they made history by becoming the first No. 1 seed to lose to a 16-seed in the NCAA Tournament, a 74-54 loss to Maryland-Baltimore County. #6 Tennessee 86, Lenoir-Rhyne 41: Jordan Bone scored 18 points and Kyle Alexander added 16 for the host Volunteers against Division II LenoirRhyn­e. Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes lettered for three seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne, located in Barnes’ hometown of Hickory, N.C. #7 Nevada 86, BYU 70: Caleb Martin scored all 21 of his points in the second half and Jordan Caroline tied a career high with 16 rebounds for the host Wolf Pack. #8 N. Carolina 78, Wofford 67: Luke Maye had 24 points and the visiting Tar Heels prevailed against Wofford, which beat Carolina last year. #9 Eric Villanova Paschall scored 100, Morgan 26 points, State Phil 77: Booth had 17 and the host Wildcats opened their national championsh­ip defense with a win. Villanova returned to the refurbishe­d Pavilion, which closed for a season for a $65 million face-lift and forced the Wildcats to play a season in Philadelph­ia’s Wells Fargo Center. #11 Auburn 101, S. Kentucky 55: Noah Dickerson scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, Jaylen Nowell added 17, and the host Huskies rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit. ASU 102, Cal State Fullerton 94: Freshman Luguentz Dort had 28 points and nine rebounds, helping the Sun Devils win in double overtime. Kyle Allman had 35 points and Khalil Ahmad 31 for the Titans. Oregon St. 72, UC Riverside 59: Tres Tinkle had 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the host Beavers. USC 83, Robert Morris 62: Shaqquan Aaron scored 20 points and Nick Rakocevic had 18 points and 16 rebounds for the host Trojans.

WOMEN Oregon’s Ionescu has triple-double

#3 Oregon 115, Alaska-Fairbanks 36: Miramonte-Orinda alum Sabrina Ionescu picked up her 11th tripledoub­le — an ongoing NCAA record — and Satou Sabally scored 23 points for the visiting Ducks. Ionescu had 18 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds. #23 ASU 81, Incarnate Word 43: Jamie Ruden scored 15 points as the host Sun Devils cruised. S.F.
