Man arrested after officer shot, injured by pellet gun

- By Sarah Ravani

A 32-year-old man suspected of shooting a police officer in the head with a pellet gun in Antioch was peacefully taken into custody early Tuesday after a five-hour standoff in a residential neighborhood, officials said.

The wounded officer was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital and was later released, Antioch police officials said. The officer was not immediately identified.

The chaotic episode began around 7:30 p.m. Monday, when officers responded to reports of a dispute between two neighbors at a home on Deerfield Drive near Fawn Hill Way, said Sgt. William Dee, a spokesman for the Antioch Police Department.

During the dispute, a family member of one of the neighbors intervened and pulled a black

semiautomatic firearm, said Sgt. John Fortner, an Antioch police spokesman.

When police arrived, they knocked on the door of the armed man’s home. He called from a window and said he would be right down. The suspect opened the door and immediately fired at the officers with the pellet gun, Fortner said.

He then shut the door and barricaded himself in the home with his parents before surrendering peacefully just after midnight on Tuesday.

A search warrant at the home later uncovered two “high-powered BB type rifles,” a “BB-type replica” semiautomatic pistol, “BB ammunition” and live pistol ammunition, police said.

The suspect, who was not identified, has history with police in another city involving possession and use of a black semiautomatic firearm that is registered to him. He was booked at the Contra Costa County Detention Facility in Martinez.
