Sharks stumble in Dallas

-

Devin Shore believes in linemate Tyler Seguin — and in the hockey concept of puck luck.

Shore scored his second goal of the game to break a tie, Anton Khudobin tied a season high with 33 saves and the Stars beat the Sharks 4-3 in Dallas on Thursday night.

Dillon Heatherington’s shot from the left point went off a defender’s leg to Shore in the left circle, and he beat goalie Martin Jones with 5:47 to play.

“That was just a lucky break,” Shore said. “They blocked the shot and it landed right on my stick. Hockey’s a pretty chaotic game. The bounce went our way for that one.”

Khudobin stopped a breakaway by Joe Thornton with just more than a minute left.

“I dialed him five-hole,” Thornton said, “and it didn’t lock. I’d like to have it back, but you can’t. I should have made a better play.”

Dallas head coach Jim Montgomery said Khudobin’s play was an example to the team.

“His will to never stop, his second and third effort, I think, gives confidence to the players to give that same third effort. The way he competes in the crease is the way our team needs to compete for 60 minutes.”

Dallas moved among the top three in the Central Division standings. San Jose fell two points behind Pacific Division leader Vancouver.

Seguin, the Stars’ leading scorer, had his first goal in 13 games and an assist. Gemel Smith also scored for Dallas.

Evander Kane, Timo Meier and Joe Pavelski scored for San Jose. Brent Burns had two assists, and Jones made 18 saves.

“That was a strange game,” San Jose head coach Peter De Boer said. “I liked our first period. Then I looked up, and we’re down 3-1.”

Golden Knights 5, Senators 3: William Carrier put visiting Vegas ahead for good after Ottawa rallied from a three-goal deficit. Jonathan Marchessault, Shea Theodore, Nick Holden and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare also scored for the Golden Knights, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves. Matt Duchene, Ryan Dzingel and Thomas Chabot scored for the Senators.

Lightning 4, Islanders 2: Andrei Vasilveksiy made 35 saves, Tyler Johnson broke a tie with 1:26 left, and Tampa Bay beat visiting New York. Johnson scored from just outside the crease off a pass from Nikita Kucherov. Steven Stamkos added an empty-netter. Tampa Bay, which leads the NHL with 25 points, also got goals from Mathieu Joseph and J.T. Miller.

Flyers 5, Coyotes 4: Shayne Gostisbehere scored on a one-timer 1:01 into overtime after Dale Weise tied the game with 2:13 left in regulation, and host Philadelphia rallied past Arizona. Scott Laughton had two goals and Travis Konecny also scored for the Flyers.

Hurricanes 4, Blackhawks 3: Goals by Andrei Svechnikov, Jaccob Slavin, Phillip Di Giuseppe and Calvin de Haan gave visiting Carolina a fourgoal lead early in the second period and the Hurricanes held off Chicago, spoiling Jeremy Colliton’s headcoaching debut. Colliton became the Blackhawks’ 38th coach Tuesday after Joel Quenneville was fired after 10 seasons. Quenneville ranked second in NHL history with 890 regular-season victories.

Panthers 4, Oilers 1: Roberto Luongo made 26 saves in his second start since missing nine games with a knee injury to lift host Florida over Edmonton. Evgenii Dadonov, Nick Bjugstad, Jonathan Huberdeau and Colton Sceviour scored for the Panthers. Leon Draisaitl scored for the Oilers, and Cam Talbot stopped 29 shots.

Canucks 8, Bruins 5: Bo Horvat had two goals and two assists and visiting Vancouver extended its winning streak to five games by beating Boston. Loui Eriksson added two goals and an assist and spurred a five-goal outburst in the second period for Vancouver. Ben Hutton and Erik Gudbranson each had a goal and an assist, and Antoine Roussel and Jake Virtanen added goals for the Canucks.

Sabres 6, Canadiens 5: Rasmus Ristolainen scored at 1:38 of overtime to give Buffalo the win at Montreal. Vladimir Sobotka and Jeff Skinner each scored twice and Conor Sheary added a goal for the Sabres. Jonathan Drouin, Matthew Peca, Andrew Shaw, Tomas Tatar and Nicolas Deslauriers scored for the Canadiens.
