Strong 2nd half lifts Cal women over BYU

Asha Thomas scored 17 points, Kristine Anigwe had 16 points and 12 rebounds, two days after her 20-20 game, and No. 23 Cal used a big fourth quarter to beat BYU 70-52 on Tuesday in Provo, Utah.

Cal trailed 25-24 at halftime, but opened the second half on a 12-2 run — with six points from Anigwe. BYU was down 54-50 with 5:39 remaining in the fourth but Anigwe scored six points during a 10-0 run for a 14-point lead with two minutes left. The Bears outscored BYU 24-11 in the fourth.

Kianna Smith added 16 points for Cal (3-0). Thomas made two free throws with 45 seconds left in the fourth to reach 1,000 career points, the 30th player in program history to reach the mark.

Anigwe had 24 points and 22 rebounds Sunday for her second career 20-20 game.

Paisley Johnson led the Cougars (1-1) with 14 points. Santa Clara 60, San Diego State 43: Lauren Yearwood had 12 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead the host Broncos (3-0) over the Aztecs (1-1). Elsewhere: Loyola Marymount (2-0) prevailed 66-64 at Arizona (1-1) despite 39 points from the Wildcats’ Aarion McDonald . ... Host Utah (2-0) defeated Alabama 72-62 behind Megan Huff ’s 21 points . ... Rutgers’ C. Vivian Stringer became the fifth Division I women’s head coach to win 1,000 games when the host Scarlet Knights beat Central Connecticu­t State 73-44. Stringer joined Pat Summitt, Geno Auriemma, Tara VanDerveer and Sylvia Hatchell in the 1,000victory club. Division II head coach Barbara Stevens also has won over 1,000 games. Stringer, 70, is the first African American head coach to reach that milestone.
