Witherspoon told to control emotions
After calling out a teammate with his on-field gesturing, cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon was called out by head coach Kyle Shanahan after the 49ers’ 27-23 loss to the Giants on Monday night.
In the third quarter, Witherspoon was in coverage on Odell Beckham Jr.’s 20-yard touchdown catch, and he quickly raised his arms in anger and frustration as Beckham began celebrating. Witherspoon’s issue: He expected to receive coverage help from safety Antone Exum, who was about 10 yards away.
Shanahan was asked if he was OK with Witherspoon’s response.
“No, I am not,” Shanahan said. “No. Man up. Don’t put that on tape. We’ll deal with it when we come in.”
Said cornerback Richard Sherman: “You shouldn’t ever do that. That’s like a cardinal rule of football. He’s frustrated because ... you’re expecting guys to be where they’re supposed to be.”
Witherspoon said he threw up his arms because he was upset that he allowed a touchdown catch.
“Playing corner, I know I’ve got to be better than that,” Witherspoon said. “And that’s just something I’ve got to improve.” Painful night: Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who has an extensive concussion history, was injured twice Monday after taking two blows to the head in a three-play sequence in the second half.
Goodwin was checked for a concussion after each play, according to a team spokesman, and he returned to the game after missing one series following his second shot to the helmet. Shanahan said Goodwin was re-checked Tuesday morning and did not have concussion symptoms.
On the penultimate play of the third quarter, Goodwin took a hit to the head from the shoulder of linebacker Alec Ogletree at the end of a 13-yard catch. Ogletree was called for unnecessary roughness on the play.
Two plays later, Goodwin was outstretched on the field after a helmet-to-helmet collision with linebacker B.J. Goodson, who had just intercepted a pass that caromed off Goodwin’s hands.
Goodwin, who had a 26-yard catch on the 49ers’ final series, was asked why he returned to the game.
“I’m a dog, so got to do dog stuff,” Goodwin said. “Got to be tough. And if I can be out there, I will.”
Goodwin has sustained at least four concussions since 2014, including a concussion that sent him to the hospital during last season’s regularseason finale against the Rams. He was also in the concussion protocol twice in 2016 with the Bills, but has said his natural sensitivity to light was the reason he was in the protocol on each occasion. Injury report: Shanahan said he expected all three players who missed Monday’s game — inside linebacker Reuben Foster (hamstring), safety Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder) and wide receiver Pierre Garcon (knee) — to return to practice next week after the 49ers’ bye.
