A 52-year-old man was killed Wednesday night in San Francisco’s MidMarket neighborhood, authorities said.

Officers responded at 11:30 p.m. to the 1000 block of Market Street and pronounced the man dead at the scene. The city medical examiner identified the victim as San Francisco resident Bart Kylstra.

Security guards along the block Thursday morning recalled police officers swarming the area the prior night. Jose Marquez, a guard standing on Market Street, said a police officer told him there had been a shooting.

Authorities have not confirmed a cause of death.

A LinkedIn profile for Kylstra shows that he was CEO of Rio Mobility, a wheelchair mobility company located in a mixed-use building on the block where the crime occurred.

Rio Mobility, also known as Daedalus Wings, creates electric wheelchair attachments that make it easier for users to climb hills.

Joe Castellano, a 24year resident of the apartments in the building, said he often saw Kylstra around the building, which is located between a taqueria and an eyebrow salon.

A door on the second floor had a city medical examiner’s seal on it when Castellano passed by Thursday morning, but he said he did not hear or see anything suspicious Wednesday night.

“(Kylstra) was welldressed and he seemed like a nice guy,” said Castellano, who helps manage the building.

No suspects have been identified in the case.
