Stanford women fall to Gonzaga

-

Stanford had won each of its first six games by at least 22 points. That didn’t deter Gonzaga.

Chandler Smith scored 10 of her 20 points in the final five minutes and the Bulldogs defeated the No. 8 Cardinal 79-73 on Sunday in Spokane, Wash.

Gonzaga (8-1) carried a 58-41 lead into the final period, but Stanford pulled to within three on Dijonai Carrington’s threepoint play with 4:17 remaining. Smith responded with two foul shots with 3:56 left and the Bulldogs, who added seven more free throws before it was over, withstood Stanford’s push.

Kiana Williams had 18 points for Stanford (6-1), and Carrington and Alanna Smith finished with 13 apiece.

Katie Campbell and Jill Townsend each had 15 points for Gonzaga, which won for the second time in 10 games against Stanford.

“We were just not aggressive,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “They really got on the glass.”

Arizona prevails

Brandon Randolph scored 20 points and Chase Jeter added 14 as Arizona defeated Connecticut 76-72 in Hartford, Conn.

The Wildcats (6-2) shot 46 percent from the floor, but just 38.5 percent in the second half. They made up for it at the line, making 19 of 22 foul shots in the game, including 12 of 13 down the stretch.

“It’s not as easy just to go to the free-throw line on an away court and deliver,” Arizona head coach Sean Miller said.

Jalen Adams had 21 points to lead the Huskies (6-2).
