Washington signs backup QB

One day after head coach Jay Gruden explained Washington’s rationale for not signing Colin Kaepernick to help boost its injury-thinned quarterbac­k position, the team said it signed Josh Johnson to back up Mark Sanchez.

Starter Alex Smith and primary backup Colt McCoy each went down with broken right legs in a three-game span and are out for the season.

Washington (6-6) also put three more players on injured reserve to raise its season total to 17: starting cornerback Quinton Dunbar, receiver Trey Quinn and guard Jonathan Cooper. Washington also signed guard Zac Kerin, center Demetrius Rhaney and defensive end Marcus Smith as free agents. Rams, St. Louis fans settle: The Rams will pay $24 million to personal-seat-license holders in St. Louis who filed a class-action lawsuit after the team moved to Los Angeles.

The class-action suit was filed on behalf of thousands of fans who bought PSLs that were good for 30 seasons at the St. Louis stadium formerly known as the Edward Jones Dome. Owner Stan Kroenke took the team to L.A. in 2016 after 21 seasons in St. Louis. Briefly: Carolina quarterbac­k Cam Newton says he’ll be ready to play against Cleveland on Sunday despite lingering pain in his throwing shoulder, but head coach Ron Rivera said, “We’ll see.
