Ross agrees to contract with Tigers

-

Former Cal and A’s righthander Tyson Ross and the Tigers reached agreement on a one-year, $5.75 million deal Monday.

Ross went a combined 8-9 with a 4.15 ERA for San Diego and St. Louis last season. He made 22 starts for the Padres, was claimed off waivers by the Cardinals in early August and pitched nine times for them, eight in relief.

“We had good scouting reports, first and foremost,” Detroit general manager Al Avila told MLB.com. “For us, he’s a legit pitcher and he’s a good candidate to even get better in 2019. His overall stuff is still pretty darn good.”

Ross, 31, is 43-65 with a 3.95 ERA in nine seasons. He made his debut with Oakland in 2010 and was an All-Star with San Diego in 2014. Royals’ move: Outfielder Billy Hamilton agreed to a one-year, $5.25 million contract with Kansas City. Hamilton, 28, hit .236 with four homers and 29 RBIs with Cincinnati last season. After earning $4.6 million this year, the Reds did not offer him a contract for next season. Briefly: The Mariners claimed infielder Kaleb Cowart on waivers from the Angels but listed him as a right-handed pitcher in their announcement. Cowart, 26, has not pitched since the Angels drafted in the first round in 2010. He hit .134 with 10 RBIs in 47 games with Los Angeles last season .... Pitcher Loek van Mil, who spent 10 seasons in the minors with the Twins, Reds and Indians — most recently with Minnesota’s Triple-A team in 2016 — is recovering in a Canberra, Australia, hospital after sustaining serious head injuries while hiking. Van Mil, who has been pitching in the Australia Baseball League, reportedly is in critical but stable condition.
