William A. McGuire

March 18, 1944 - November 22, 2018

-

After a long period of treatment for brain cancer, our much beloved friend Bill McGuire transitioned to a higher plane on November 22nd, Thanksgiving day. Throughout his stay at Alma Via San Francisco, and before that at CPMC Davies hospital, Bill was blessed with a seemingly endless stream of visitors. He touched the lives of many: his sister Mary, brothers Jim and Danny, students and faculty at Presentation High school and City College of San Francisco, and a family of close friends going as far back as his school days in St. Louis.

In 1969, Bill was drafted into the U.S. Army serving at Letterman Hospital in the Presidio. Bill was quite proud of his military service which included specialist training in Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat. He was honorably discharged as a Specialist- Five in April, 1971.

As an English Professor at City College, Bill included the Humanities and Comparative Religion in his repertoire. He especially loved teaching a course on San Francisco Arts and mentoring young students who looked up to him as a caring, often humorous soul. He will be sorely missed.

A funeral mass for Bill McGuire will be held at St. Thomas More Church in San Francisco on December 12, 2018 at 6:30 pm. Family members and friends are invited to a reception in the school’s big hall after the mass.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family are encouraged to make a donation to the “Bill McGuire Humanities Scholarship” at City College. Make your check payable to CCSF with “Bill McGuire Humanities Scholarship” in the memo section. Send check to: Erin Denney, English Department, Mailbox L161, City College of San Francisco, 50 Phelan Ave, San Francisco, CA 94112.
