Redwood City police officers shot a man Monday morning who allegedly ran at them with a butcher knife, authorities said.

Police responded to the 400 block of Lincoln Avenue around 8:47 a.m. after a woman called 911 to report her husband was attempting to kill himself, authorities said. Officers arrived at the home to find a woman covered in blood in the front yard, according to police, who didn’t say why the woman was bloody.

The woman directed officers to the backyard, and they came upon a man at the side of the house carrying a butcher knife, authorities said. Two officers tried to persuade the man to drop the knife, police said, but the man refused to drop the weapon and ran at the officers, forcing one officer to use his Taser.

The other officer, a 20year-veteran, shot the man with his firearm after the Taser failed to subdue him, police said.

Authorities transported the man, a 33-year-old Redwood City resident, to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

No officers were injured, police said.

Last week, two men died in separate officer-involved shootings in Napa and outside the city of Martinez.
