Cold War: Polish actress Joanna Kulig gets the role of a lifetime, and she responds with passion and ferocity, in this latest from director Pawel Pawlikowski, about a couple who are obsessed with each other but can’t seem to get along. It’s set in Europe in the 1950s and shot in gorgeous, glossy black and white. Rated R. 88 minutes. In Polish and French with English subtitles. — Mick LaSalle

Miss Bala: Gina Rodriguez stars in this action thriller about a woman who takes on a Mexican drug cartel that has kidnapped her friend. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke. Rated PG-13. 104 minutes. — Mick LaSalle

They Shall Not Grow Old: Director Peter Jackson has taken World War I footage, cleaned it up, colorized it, slowed it down and converted it to three dimensions, and the effect is staggering, giving a 100-yearold conflict an immediacy it has never had, at least in public memory. This is a great documentary. Rated R. 99 minutes. — Mick LaSalle

Tito and the Birds: A society in the grip of growing mistrust and paranoia is well advised to heed the wisdom of our feathered friends. In this appealing Brazilian animated feature, a 10-year-old boy works to develop a machine to translate bird language and solve a pandemic of fear. The expressive animation style, which emphasizes painterly brushstrokes, is pleasing to watch. Not rated. 73 minutes. In Portuguese with English subtitles. — Walter Addiego
