Vallejo police kill armed man in drive-through disturbance

An armed man who had fallen asleep in a Taco Bell drive-through line in Vallejo was fatally shot by police Saturday night, according to the Vallejo Police Department.

Police received a call at 10:36 p.m. from a Taco Bell employee at the restaurant at 974 Admiral Callaghan Lane. The employee told police that a man was “hunched over” behind the wheel of a silver Mercedes sedan. When police arrived they found that the driver was unresponsive in a locked car with a handgun sitting in his lap.

After calling for backup, the responding officers determined the car’s transmission was in drive and the doors were locked. “They made efforts to stop any forward progress by the Mercedes as they assessed the situation and asked for additional resources,” police said in a statement.

The driver then abruptly moved. Police ordered him to keep his hands visible, but the man quickly reached for his gun. Fearing their safety, the officers shot him, according to the statement.

The officers requested medical assistance and began lifesaving efforts, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A loaded handgun was recovered from the vehicle, police said.

The identity of the driver has not been released and an investigation is ongoing.
