Bernard Aloysius “Barney” Dunne, 89, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 21, 2019. Born on the first day of summer in 1929 to John Patrick and Marie Theresa (Dempsey) Dunne, Barney was a third generation San Franciscan who entered life on Divisadero Street and exited our lives on Castro Street. A veteran of the Korean War, Barney spent his entire life in the city he loved, graduating from St. Ignatius high school in 1947, marrying Margaret Mary “Peggy” (Byrne) at Most Holy Redeemer in 1958, and raising two children in Noe Valley. For 35 years he worked at Bank of America. Hired first as a branch teller, Barney helped usher the bank’s transition into the computer age. After retiring in 1990 he began traveling, culminatin­g in a trip to The Netherland­s and New Jersey to meet his grandchild­ren after their births in 2008. Barney was a longtime 49ers fan, infamous bingo caller, annual Santa Claus, former cigar aficionado, and beloved volunteer at St. Philip’s. He will be remembered for his gentle kindness, corny jokes, generous spirit and stubborn will.

Barney was the loving husband of Peggy Dunne who passed away in 2004. He is survived by his daughter Anne “Nancy” Dunne of New York, son John Dunne of New Jersey, sister Peggy Walker, and grandchild­ren Owen and Ciara Dunne, and Sophie Pels. He was predecease­d by his siblings Claire Ghiselli, Jack Dunne, Jeanne Byrne, Geraldine McKeown, Daniel Dunne, and Barbara Silveira.

A memorial mass for Barney will be held at St Philips the Apostle Church on Monday, February 18th at 11am followed by a reception. 725 Diamond St, SF CA 94114.
