Feature simulcast race: Grade 1, $3 million Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs

Update: All gates open at 7:15 a.m. Saturday, with the first simulcast race from Churchill Downs scheduled for 7:30 a.m. … The total betting handle on last Saturday’s 13-race program with six stakes events was $7,345,045 — the second highest in track history. The record of $8,653,852 was set on a 12-race program June 12, 2016, when there was a mandatory payout of the Jackpot Pick Six, which had a carryover of $1,408,071. The handle on the Pick Six alone that day was $4,594,997. There was a mandatory payout of the Pick Six on Saturday, too, but there was no carryover because one ticket (purchased at Arlington Park) hit it for $383,167.30 the previous day. … Though the on-track attendance was 2,202 for the San Francisco Mile card, it jumped to 3,753 on Sunday as Dollar Day continues to be an attraction. Sunday’s handle of $5,261,786 in 12 races was the second only to Saturday’s this season. … Eagle Screams, a 10-year-old former stakes horse, seeks his third straight win in Friday’s fourth race as he steps up to the $16,000 claiming level. Trainer Isidro Tamayo claimed him for $6,250 April 12 after Eagle Screams had won a restricted $8,000 claimer. … Gabo’s Macondo, who finished 2018 with four straight wins capped by the Bull Dog Handicap at the Big Fresno Fair, makes his first start of 2019 in Saturday’s sixth race. Leading trainer Jonathan Wong claimed Gabo’s Macondo for $20,000 when the winning streak began, and he is in for $62,500 Saturday.

Elsewhere: With early favorite Omaha Beach having been scratched Wednesday afternoon because of a breathing issue, Game Winner (9-2), Improbable and Roadster (5-1), Maximum Security and Tacitus (8-1) are the only ones under 10-1 in the new morning line for the Kentucky Derby. Post time for the 145th Run for the Roses is 3:50 p.m. PDT. … Instagrand didn’t make it to the Derby, but the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained colt is the 6-5 morning-line favorite in Saturday’s Grade 3, $400,000 Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs. Instagrand dominated his two starts in 2018 and finished third in the Gotham Stakes and Santa Anita Derby this year. … The West Coast also has the favorite in Friday’s Grade 1, $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks as Bellafina is 2-1 in a full field of 3year-old fillies. Bellafina has six wins and a second in eight starts but finished a distant fourth as the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in her only previous start at Churchill Downs.
