No. 11 Oregon State tops No. 3 Stanford

No. 11 Oregon State (35-16-1, 20-6 Pac-12) rolled to a 5-2 victory over No. 3 Stanford (39-10-0, 20-6) at Sunken Diamond. Will Matthiesse­n had two hits and drove in both of the Cardinal’s runs.

The scheduled third game of the series was canceled. The Beavers and Cardinal are tied for second in the conference, 1½ games back of No. 1 UCLA.

Jared Horn tossed a five-hitter and the last of his nine strikeouts came with a runner at third and two outs in the ninth inning as Cal (30-18, 15-11 Pac-12) pulled out a 3-2 win over Arizona State (36-15, 15-11) at Evans Diamond.

The Bears’ Andrew Vaughn went 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. The scheduled third game of this series also was canceled. The Bears and Sun Devils are tied for fourth in the conference.

Carlos Lomelli held host Pepperdine (24-25, 14-13 WCC) to two hits in eight innings as St. Mary’s (33-20, 17-10) cruised to a 4-0 win. The Gaels open play in the WCC’s four-team, double-eliminatio­n conference tournament against Gonzaga in Stockton on Thursday night. Soccer: Lionel Messi scored twice to hit the 50-goal mark for the sixth time in his career. Messi scored his 49th and 50th goals in all competitio­ns this season to give Barcelona a 2-2 draw at Eibar and finish as the league’s top scorer with 36 goals for the Spanish champions. NFL: Defensive lineman Chris Long announced on Twitter his retirement from football, ending an 11-year NFL career that included two Super Bowl titles and the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. Long, 33, the son of Hall of Famer Howie Long, had 70 career sacks with the Rams, Patriots and Eagles.
