1 Hiker rescued: A hiker who was missing in the mountains north of Los Angeles for a week was found and apparently survived by drinking water from a creek, authorities said. A helicopter crew found Eugene Jo, 73, in a canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains on Saturday and hoisted him to safety, sheriff ’s Sgt. Greg Taylor said. He was checked at a hospital and released. Jo was hiking with a group to the 8,000foot summit of Mount Waterman on June 22 when he became separated from them. Taylor said more than 70 people were searching for him in the mountains Saturday.
2 E. coli infections: Authorities say E. coli bacteria encountered at the San Diego County Fair have killed one child and sickened three others. The county Health and Human Services Agency said four confirmed cases have been linked to animal contact. While three cases didn’t result in hospitalization, a 2yearold boy was hospitalized and died from a complication June 24. The children, ages 2 to 13, visited the fair from June 8 to 15. Fair officials have now closed public access to all animal areas, including the petting zoo, but plan to keep the fair open.
3 Missing person: Authorities at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona searched for a man from Healdsburg reported missing after a hike. Peter Francis Schwab, 66, of Healdsburg was last seen Friday on a small beach downriver from National Canyon, National Park Service officials said. Park officials say Schwab was reported missing after a day hike to the Narrows in National Canyon. Grand Canyon rangers are searching the area and have asked anyone who may have seen Schwab to contact the Park Service.
4 Plot against Muslims: Three men accused of plotting to attack a Muslim community in New York with homemade explosives have pleaded guilty. The three and a 16yearold high school student were arrested in January and accused of planning to attack the community of Islamberg, near Binghamton. Police have said the defendants had access to 23 rifles and shotguns and three homemade explosives. Investigators uncovered the plot after a student reported a suspicious comment in a lunchroom. Vincent Vetromile, 20, pleaded guilty to firstdegree attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He faces up to 12 years in prison. Brian Colaneri, 20, and Andrew Crysel, 19, pleaded guilty to terrorismrelated conspiracy. Each faces up to 12 years in prison. 5 Loan fraud: Three women have been arrested on suspicion of stealing more than $1 million in federal student financial aid through Fullerton College in Orange County. Federal prosecutors say the three enrolled hundreds of mostly nonexistent students, successfully applied for grants and loans, and then pocketed the money. At least two of the more than 200 names used to apply for loans were inmates in state prisons. Sparkle Shorale Nelson, 32, Shykeena Monique Johnson, 31, and Jerrika Johnson, 37, have all pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy, identity theft, mail fraud and wire fraud.
