D.C. sees a parade ... of Marlins to bench

Stephen Strasburg struck out 14 in 71⁄3 shutout innings, Brian Dozier and Matt Adams homered, and the Nationals continued their midseason surge with a 31 win over the Marlins in Washington on Wednesday night.

Washington has won seven of its past eight and is 2510 since May 24. The Nationals are 4441, the first time they’ve been three games over .500 this season.

Strasburg (104) was, as usual, brilliant against the Marlins. He allowed two hits and two walks while extending his personal winning streak against Miami to 11. The righthander is 207 with a 2.86 ERA in 34 career starts against the Marlins, who didn’t get a man past first until the eighth.

“I just tried to get back to basics, and it seemed to be much better tonight,” Strasburg said.

Strasburg’s gem included his first immaculate inning. Strasburg struck out Garrett Cooper, Neil Walker and Starlin Castro on nine pitches in the fourth.

“You didn’t see a lot of guys coming back feeling like they had pitches to hit,” Miami manager Don Mattingly said. “Guys coming back, when they go check it, basically (said), ‘He’s hitting corners and basically giving you nothing to hit.’ ”

Miami’s Sandy Alcantara (48), making his first start since earning an AllStar nod Sunday, allowed two runs in 5 2 ⁄3 innings.

Pirates 6, Cubs 5: Jung Ho Kang scored on Corey Dickerson’s sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to carry host Pittsburgh over Chicago. Josh Bell hit his 26th homer of the season and fourth of the series and added a double to give him 59 extra-base hits, most ever by a National League player before the All-Star break.

Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 3: Danny Jansen and Brandon Drury each hit two-run homers, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added a solo shot and host Toronto beat Boston.

Orioles 9, Rays 6: Renato Nuñez hit a three-run homer in a six-run ninth, and Baltimore held off host Tampa Bay.

Yankees 5, Mets 1: Domingo German pitched six sharp innings in his return from injury, Didi Gregorius and Gio Urshela hit consecutive homers, and the Yankees beat the Mets at Citi Field to split this year’s four-game Subway Series.

Reds 3, Brewers 0: Yasiel Puig homered for the second consecutive game and host Cincinnati overcame the loss of second baseman Scooter Gennett to a groin injury to beat Milwaukee.

Braves 9, Phillies 2: Josh Donaldson and Austin Riley hit threerun homers and host Atlanta solidified its NL East lead.

Angels 6, Rangers 2: Mike Trout homered twice and Jaime Barria, filling the roster spot of the late Tyler Skaggs, struck out a career-high eight batters in five innings for visiting Los Angeles.

Astros 4, Rockies 2: Wade Miley tossed six strong innings and Yuli Gurriel and Alex Bregman homered as visiting Houston topped Colorado.

Indians 4, Royals 0: Mike Clevinger pitched six innings of fourhit ball and Carlos Santana and Roberto Perez went deep to lift Cleveland over host Kansas City.

Cardinals 5, Mariners 2: Stanford alum Tommy Edman hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run ninth for visiting St. Louis.

White Sox sweep Tigers: Jose Abreu hit a three-run homer in the the ninth as host Chicago beat Detroit in the nightcap of a day-night doubleheader, In the opener, top prospect Dylan Cease threw five innings in his major-league debut as the Sox won 7-5.
