Baer addresses players

- By Steve Kroner

Around 4:10 p.m. Friday, Giants President Larry Baer addressed the team in the clubhouse at Oracle Park. It was his first talk with the players since he returned Tuesday from a threemonth suspension for an altercation he had with his wife, Pam.

Baer did not speak with the media after the meeting.

During his pregame news conference, manager Bruce Bochy did not elaborate much on Baer’s speech that had taken place about 20 minutes earlier.

“He just wanted to talk to the fellas for a little bit,” Bochy said of Baer. “That’s really all I’m going to say. He went a few minutes. It’s the first time he got a chance to address them. So, he just spent a few minutes with them.”

The players were not available to speak with the media following Baer’s address to them.

Baer has been the team’s president since 2012. Giants Chairman Rob Dean has become the permanent “control person” authorized to represent the team in league matters. Solano surges: Though he was riding a 10game hitting streak, infielder Donovan Solano was not in the Giants’ starting lineup Friday night. He pinch hit and went 0for2. Solano had started the previous four games at shortstop as Brandon Crawford was sidelined with a tight right hamstring.

Solano’s surge is all the more impressive considering he hadn’t played in the majors since a brief stint with the Yankees in 2016 before he made his debut with the Giants on May 9.

“He’s a tough little out,” Bochy said of Solano, who’s listed at 5foot7. “He’s got good balance at the plate, short swing. He’s going to put it in play. He uses the whole field.”

The Giants have used Solano at short in place of Crawford and at second in place of Joe Panik. Crawford and Panik both are lefthanded hitters. Solano, a righthanded batter, entered Friday hitting .348 (16for46) against lefthanded pitchers and .308 (24for78) overall.

Said Bochy: “He’s taken full advantage of (his opportunity). He’s done a nice job.”

Solano, 31, spent his first four bigleague seasons (201215) with the Marlins. Briefly: Lefthander Travis Bergen, who has been on the disabled list since May 21 with a shoulder strain, has had a setback on his rehab assignment with TripleA Sacramento. Bochy said Bergen experienced tightness after his most recent outing, which was Monday. Bergen will be shut down for a week and then reevaluated. … Before Friday’s matchup with the Cardinals, the Giants’ previous 17 games came against NL West teams.
