Penguins extend coach Sullivan

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed Mike Sullivan — who guided the team to Stanley Cup championsh­ips in 2016 and 2017 — to a fouryear contract extension through the 202324 season.

Sullivan, 51, is 1749234 with Pittsburgh since taking over for Mike Johnston in December 2015. Sullivan’s arrival provided a spark that helped the Penguins become the first team in nearly two decades to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. Pittsburgh was swept by the New York Islanders in the first round of the 2019 playoffs.

The Columbus Blue Jackets resigned freeagent defenseman Scott Harrington to a threeyear contract. A person with knowledge of the signing said the contract is worth $4.9 million.

Harrington, 26, set career highs in games (73), assists (15) and points (17) in with the Blue Jackets in 201819. He added four assists in 10 playoff games. Motor sports: Joey Logano will start on the pole Saturday night in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona Internatio­nal Speedway after Friday’s qualifying was canceled after lightning was detected near the 2½mile track in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Logano leads the Cup series in owner points, so the Team Penske driver was awarded the top starting spot. Kyle Busch of Joe Gibbs Racing will start alongside Logano on the front row. Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick of StewartHaa­s Racing will start right behind them.

In the Xfinity race Friday night, Ross Chastain led a sweep for Kaulig Racing in the raindelaye­d event at Daytona. WNBA: Due to Southern California’s 7.1 earthquake that was felt in Las Vegas, the game between the host Aces and the Washington Mystics was postponed at halftime.

The scoreboard swayed as the Mandalay Bay Events Center shook, prompting the decision to suspend the game with Washington leading 5136 at halftime. No makeup date was announced.

Deaths: University of Hawaii linebacker Scheyenne Sanitoa, 21, died Thursday, the school said Friday. No details were available, but the school said the death did not happen on campus.

Spanish motorcycle rider Aurelio Martinez, 56, died after crashing in qualifying for the 24 Hours of Catalunya in Montmelo, Spain. Spanish media said Martinez was hit by the motorcycle of another rider who had to jump from his bike after losing his brakes.
